HEARTS IN MERUM’S 2025 SELEZIONE OLIO

In the world of extra virgin olive oil, Merum’s annual selection stands apart for its quiet authority and uncompromising standards. For the 2025 edition, three of Trebbio’s oils were awarded for their quality and character—each earning a place in one of the most respected tastings in the German-speaking world.

Leccino and Subtle & Harmonious each received two hearts, signifying excellence and a profile that stands out for both harmony and expression. Peppery Intense was awarded one heart, marking it as a very good oil, worthy of clear recommendation.

These awards were given after Merum’s tasting panel evaluated 366 extra virgin olive oils from the 2024 harvest. Only 240 oils passed the rigorous selection process. Tuscany dominated this year’s results, with 116 oils chosen—including Trebbio’s, which stood out for their sensory clarity and biodynamic integrity. The tasting notes tell the story in detail:

Leccino Bio 2024:

Mittelhelles Grün; dezent grünfruchtig; Olivenblätter, halbreife Oliven, Artischocke, auch Gras, blättrige Bitterkeit, gute Schärfe, recht dünnflüssig. (Light-medium green; subtly green-fruity; notes of olive leaves, semi-ripe olives, artichoke, and grass; leafy bitterness, good pungency, relatively fluid texture.)

Subtle & Harmonious Bio 2024:

Mittelhelles Grün; intensiv grünfruchtig; Tomatenblätter und Gras, entfernt Olivenblätter und Artischocke; dezent bitter, feine, ansteigende Schärfe, recht dünnflüssig. (Light-medium green; intensely green-fruity; tomato leaves and grass, with distant hints of olive leaf and artichoke; subtly bitter, a fine and rising pungency, relatively fluid.)

Peppery Intense Bio 2024:

Mittelhelles Grün; schwach fruchtig; halbreife Mandeln, auch Olive, entfernt grasig, adstringierend-bitter, deutliche Schärfe, dünnflüssig.
(Light-medium green; mildly fruity; semi-ripe almonds, olive, faint grassiness, astringent bitterness, marked spiciness, fluid texture.)

In addition to these sensory notes, Merum also highlighted Trebbio’s broader identity:

"Trebbio ist ein familiengeführtes Unternehmen in der Toskana, das sich der Wiederbelebung eines historischen Anwesens im Mugello-Gebiet widmet... Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Wiederentdeckung und Wiedereinführung einer einheimischen Sorte: der Dianora del Trebbio."

Trebbio’s estate, situated near Florence and home to a UNESCO-listed Medici villa, has become a benchmark in biodynamic olive oil production. Since 2015, more than 30,000 trees representing over fifteen Tuscan cultivars have been planted—including a rare local variety, Dianora del Trebbio, which is being carefully reintroduced.
